Da Vinci’s Student Council

Da Vinci’s Student Council Over $3,000 was donated to the Candlelighters of El Paso, The Ronald McDonald House, and The Susan G. Komen Foundation in a check ceremony that was featured on the KVIA News.

The John Madden A-B Honor Roll event was a big success, with the title of John Madden Champion going to Jordan Morales. The Linked for Pink Campaign, to fight breast cancer, also stirred school spirit, while pitting grade levels against each other in an effort to raise the most money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The event underway now is the canned food drive, which unites the Student Council and the Junior Student Council and presents the challenge of collecting 1,000 cans for the Rescue Mission.
Quickly approaching is the Haunted House, which will be held on Friday, October 28.

Along with these in-school events, Student Council has organized several community service outings in shelters throughout El Paso. On Saturday, October 22, the students will volunteer at the Child Crisis Center. Saturday, October 29 is the community event at the Ronald McDonald House, while Sunday, October 30, Student Council will have a booth at the Miracle League Trunk or Treat event.

UTEP Professor Guest Speaker

Dr. Bruce Louden, Professor of Linguistics and Languages at the University of Texas El Paso, was a guest speaker in Advanced Placement Junior English and Advanced Placement Senior English on Tuesday, September 20.
Dr. Louden has published numerous books and articles on Homer, and his lectures at Da Vinci included background stories of The Illiad and The Odyssey. As the AP Senior English class was completing a unit on the epic novel Cold Mountain, Seniors were especially interested in the parallels found in The Odyssey.
Students who had read all of or parts of The Illiad or the Odyssey and those familiar with the Old Testament of The Bible were eager to ask questions at the conclusion.

One student wrote to Dr. Louden, “I thought this was going to be boring, and instead it was like eating candy.” Other students headed to the Da Vinci library the next day to check out The Illiad and The Odyssey.
Students thanked Dr. Louden the following Friday by presenting him with a thank you poster and an edible arrangement of chocolate covered strawberries.
