What is a free lending library?
A trendy fad spinning like wild fire “free lending libraries” is a refreshing novelty for readers all over the world, one that includes the City of El Paso and soon to ignite Burnham Wood Charter School District schools. Howard Burnham and DaVinci School for Science and the Arts will become one of many in and around the city to display these beautiful wooden boxes. The book lending philosophy is on an honor system, you leave a book and take a book and return the book for others to read. It began as a project in a small town driven by literacy efforts and has flourished throughout the globe.
At Burnham Wood Charter schools our joint venture is a little different. Our vision or focus is to acquire donations from our community for our students to read about permaculture. This project is currently taking shape at both schools with a mission for students to gain and appreciate growing their own. Parents and students are asked to borrow a book and bring it back for others to enjoy. And, if possible donate a book about plants, growing fruits, vegetable, trees and other topics along those lines.
Two free lending libraries will be displayed outside each school when ready. Students from Mr. Westman’s high school and middle school classes are currently creating nifty art designs and painting the boxes. For further information about free lending libraries visit their web site @ http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/; and, for book donations send an email to the school Librarian, Miss Martha Holguin at email@example.com.
Newly Created Library Portal
Greetings from the Library! Burnham Wood Charter School District parents and families of children in our schools as an effort to create an extension of support for student success, the school library has created a “Library Portal.” The newly created web presence can be found if you link to the school’s main web page, select and click on any of the three schools listed, and scroll down to “Library Information Center”. Once you are connected to the library portal, parents and students may access information links arranged in subject order for homework assistance, biographies, science fair projects and many other links of interest. The portal also includes: a “Reading List”; Dewey4Kids; “Book of the Month”; “Writing” and, an “Internet Safety” link. The reading list link contains a selection of books according to age or grade appropriate books for students; the writing link consist of a display of writing samples of student work; and, the link on Internet Safety provides information for parents as an awareness update on internet safety.
